Purple Heart Day
Sunday August 7th

Recognized among philatist, The self-adhesive stamp will be the 11th collectible version of the design since the first 37¢ Purple Heart stamp was issued May 30, 2003, (Scott 3784).

By Danielle DeSimone,  On August 7, Purple Heart Day, the nation pauses to acknowledge and remember the sacrifices made by the brave members of our military. The Purple Heart medal is presented to service members who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the U.S. military. A Purple Heart is a solemn distinction and means a service member has greatly sacrificed themselves, or paid the ultimate price, while in the line of duty. According to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, more than 1.8 million Purple Heart medals have been presented to service members since the award was created in 1782.“Introduced as the “Badge of Military Merit” by General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart is also the nation’s oldest military award. In military terms, the award had ‘broken service,’ as it was ignored for nearly 150 years until it was re-introduced on February 22, 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The medal’s plain inscription ‘FOR MILITARY MERIT’ barely expresses its significance…”

1. The Purple Heart is the Oldest Military Award Still Presented to American Service Members
2. The Purple Heart Was One of the First Military Medals Given to All Ranks
3. Today’s Purple Heart Medal and Eligibility
4. Who Received the First Purple Heart in U.S. History? During the Revolutionary War, Continental Army soldiers William Brown and Elijah Churchill were the first soldiers to receive the Badge of Military Merit, the predecessor to the Purple Heart
5. Famous Purple Heart Recipients:  James Arness, Charles Bronson, James Garner, Rod Serling), writers (Kurt Vonnegut, Oliver Stone), athletes (Warren Spahn, Pat Tillman, Rocky Bleier), and even animals Sgt. Stubby the dog and Sgt. Reckless the horse.
6. The First Woman to Receive a Purple Heart Medal.  In 1942, Army Lt. Annie G. Fox became the first woman to receive a Purple Heart for her heroic actions during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
7. John F. Kennedy, the Only President With a Purple Heart
8. How Many Purple Hearts Can You Receive?  Service members can receive multiple Purple Hearts throughout their military career.

The month of August is known for many things and is often called “the dog days of summer.”  August is the eighth month of the year in our calendar.
In the Northern Hemisphere, it is getting close to the end of summer.  However, in the Southern hemisphere, during August, spring is approaching. August was named after Augustus Caesar in 8 B. C. Before this date, it was called Sextilla which means 6. This is because it was the 6th month on the Roman Calendar.
