It's National Women's Month
Picture

To our friends Grace and Ashley in Maine.  We are delighted you enjoyed our web page.  For the month of March we honored women on stamps.  March is National Women's Month in the U.S.  We are displaying just a few of the U.S. stamps that were published with women as the central theme.  Ashley, how many women's accomplishments can you identify and what was their contributions to the U.S.?

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

March 1, 2022  Mardi Gras Carnival 2022  Significance of Mardi Gras Carnival 2022--Mardi Gras Carnival 2022, also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, is an annual celebration in the United States and in many countries around the world–mainly those with large Roman Catholic populations. Traditionally, it is known as the day prior to the religious season of Lent ...  but it also serves as a day of celebration.

March 13, 2022     Daylight Savings Time Begins.  Daylight Savings 2022  is the practice of setting the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the warmer parts of the year (usually summer months), and back again in the colder parts (usually fall), in order to make better use of natural daylight so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.

March 17, 2022    St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day 2022 (also known as Saint Patrick's Day or the Feast of Saint Patrick) is a holiday that remembers one of Ireland's patron saints, St. Patrick, and as a day of recognition of Irish and Irish American culture. St. Patrick's Day 2022 is observed on March 17. Although a legal holiday only in Suffolk County, Savannah, Georgia and Massachusetts (where it is recognized alongside Evacuation Day) it is nonetheless widely recognized and celebrated throughout the United States.
